About

This blog will explore the issue of Autism and the inclusion of students with this difficulty in the classroom. For the purpose of identifying certain issues a case study example has been created to enable a background story of the situation.

Case Study

Brock is a 10 year old boy who has been diagnosed with autism. Testing and class performance suggest that he is functioning above average in mathematics and logical thinking activities however much lower in literacy and less prescribed activities. He has very limited interaction with people who are not his family and spends most of his time by himself. Brock’s strengths are his large bank of general knowledge and his strong interests’ in certain areas. He knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He can also relate well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. Brock’s parents are motivated to help him and have the time to assist with his intervention.

From this case study the areas of interest which will be explored further to allow for maximum inclusion in the classroom is that of:

These issues are:

  1. Attention and memory retention
  2. Language Development
  3. Need for control and order
  4. Other challenging behaviours
  5. Social awkwardness/ interactions
